Potable Water Storage Tank Disinfection

California Backflow & Chlorination disinfects potable water storage tanks to AWWA C652 standard for new tank commissioning and for tanks returning to service after repair, cleaning, or a suspected contamination event. Our crews are DPR-licensed and coordinate directly with your water purveyor.

When Tank Disinfection Is Required

New storage tanks must be disinfected before they are placed into service. Existing tanks require disinfection after interior repairs, recoating, structural work, cleaning that breaches the tank interior, or any event that may have introduced contamination, such as an open hatch, flood exposure, or a failed vent screen.

Purveyors and inspectors generally require documented disinfection and a passing bacteriological result before releasing a tank for potable use.

WHAT WE HANDLE

What Our Tank Disinfection Service Covers

Tank Isolation

The tank is isolated from the active distribution system before any chlorine is introduced, protecting the rest of the network.

AWWA C652 Chlorination

Chlorine solution is applied at the concentration and contact time AWWA C652 specifies for the method appropriate to your tank.

Dechlorination & Neutralization

Residual chlorine is neutralized before discharge so disposal meets local and state requirements.

Flush & Refill

The tank is flushed and refilled with potable water once disinfection is complete.

Bacteriological Sampling

Samples are collected and processed through our state-certified laboratory partner to confirm the tank is safe for use.

Purveyor-Ready Reporting

Chlorine residuals, contact time, dechlorination, and lab results are compiled into a report ready for direct submission, same-day when lab results allow.

FAQ

Common Questions

How long does tank disinfection take from start to finish?

Isolation, chlorination, and hold time typically run one to two days depending on tank size and method, with lab turnaround added after sampling. We coordinate the schedule so the tank returns to service as quickly as the purveyor’s requirements allow.

What triggers a required disinfection?

New tank commissioning, interior repairs or recoating, any event that opens the tank to potential contamination, and any purveyor or inspector requirement following maintenance work.

Do you handle tanks of all sizes?

Yes, from small hydropneumatic and booster tanks to large ground-level and elevated storage tanks. Call (858) 523-8113 with your tank’s capacity and access details for a scoped quote.

What happens if the bacteriological sample fails?

We return promptly to redisinfect and resample, and we keep the purveyor informed of the revised schedule so the project timeline is affected as little as possible.
