When Tank Disinfection Is Required
New storage tanks must be disinfected before they are placed into service. Existing tanks require disinfection after interior repairs, recoating, structural work, cleaning that breaches the tank interior, or any event that may have introduced contamination, such as an open hatch, flood exposure, or a failed vent screen.
Purveyors and inspectors generally require documented disinfection and a passing bacteriological result before releasing a tank for potable use.
